July marks a special occasion for the inhabitants of Launceston, Cornwall. The annual agricultural show, The Launceston Show brings families from far and wide to see spectacular prize animals, participate in Cornish games and enjoy a wide range of music and food!
140 years ago, a man called Frederick Smale departed on horseback from his farm-dwelling in Lewannick, on the outskirts of Launceston, to the first agricultural show the parish ever held. Fred was to win first prize for his prized hunter gelding that day.
Fastforward to the year 2022... Our Graphic Designer Daniel, was doing some digging into his family history. This man, Frederick Smale was Dan's ancestor on his mother's side (going back 6 generations). The family lived and worked there as farmers. Before that, the family name originated in Devon.
Earlier this year, we were given the privilege of working on a very special project, the new Launceston Show website. It was only right that Dan got to work on something which he had a deep relationship to - he says he 'couldn't stop imagining Frederick travelling to the centre of the historic town every day to trade his goods and earn a living. Perhaps on his winning horse!' 🐎 Helping The Association in Launceston to preserve their heritage through great graphic design and strategy was an opportunity of a lifetime.
There's something in Dan's blood that makes him want to work with Cornish businesses and it's amazing that he now has a connection with Launceston all these years later.
